Workshop Description:
Commedia dell'Arte took Europe by storm in the 16th century and can still thrill audiences today. This workshop will focus on elements of Commedia that I have found are particularly useful for modern performers - physical characterization, mask technique, improvisation and the well rehearsed routines called 'lazzi'. Students will be introduced to some of the main characters of Commedia, including Pantalone, Isabella, Columbina, Arlecchino and others, first with just our bodies and then using my set of Bruce Maar's wonderful half-masks. Commedia is a powerful theatrical style and elements of this form have helped me in every aspect of my work as a clown, actor, director, and playwright. This class is designed for students with some performance training and/or experience; no prior experience with Commedia dell'Arte is required.

I spent every day on the midway. I wanted to growp up to be different enough to be accepted by them and live happily ever after. For three years in a row I bonded with the legless man that ran the bingo tent. Hand walking around the counter handing prizes and collecting money. He was the first DAK that I had seen in real live. I had the feeling that he had MY body. I was the one that wase suppose to be legless. "THATS" what my body is suppose to look like. SInce early childhood I have never had a dream in which I have legs. Im 57 years old and still I do not ream of having legs. I handwalk backwards. Always dressed up to play with the other kids . Cross my leg yoga stle then put on a large par of pants and be the legless man. One year we returned once again to the fair. He was gone. I think of him often. Time passes... The bingo tents are gone too. ........"Now what will I do?" I asked myself.

Workshop with William Hall – “Improvisation for Clowns” October 10 and 11

The Clown Conservatory is delighted to offer another year of exciting artistic development opportunities to CIRCUS CENTER students. In this unique workshop series, resident and guest instructors will coach participants on a wide range of topics. The Series is appropriate for students new to the fields of clowning and performance, as well as, those with more experience.

Upcoming Workshop:

October 10 and 11: William Hall – “Improvisation for Clowns”

Two days of Improvisation for the inner and outer clown. Action (not talk) will set the tone of the workshop. We’ll explore how to trust your own instinct AND play well with others. We’ll learn how to accept what your brain gives you AND what your partner gives you. We’ll explore the relationship of character to laughter, story to laughter and being obvious. I promise that you will laugh during the workshop. Improv will help you build new material, work with the audience and find the ‘golden mistakes’ when things don’t go as planned.

WILLIAM HALL is an actor, improviser and teacher. He is the founder of BATS Improv in San Francisco. BATS Improv is the largest full time improv theatre and school in the Bay Area. He has studied extensively with improv theorist Keith Johnstone. He is a founding member of the San Francisco based Comedy Theater Group; Fratelli Bologna where he has helped create more than a dozen original comedies including the Holiday Comedy Classic "The Weber Christmas A charmingly blasphemous Yule tide tale". Fratelli Bologna was the first improv company to work at Disneyland. He developed and trained improv casts for Disneyland and the Queen Mary and trained the interactive characters for the World of Coke-a-Cola in Las Vegas. Currently William works with Fratelli Bologna to bring the power of theatre to businesses. Using traditional monologues, scenes, masks and improvisation to explore the dilemmas, challenges and opportunities that the future presents.
Want to join? We are looking for a few more "Rioters"!

Calling all actors, dancers (Burlesque, Belly, Ballet and Modern), contortionists, jugglers, knife throwers, acrobats, puppeteers, hula-hoopers, magicians, stilt walkers, object manipulators, poi spinners (no fire please) and sideshow spectacles -- if you have a talent and a desire to perform, we want to see it! If this project sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to audition.

The show will be Oct. 29-31, Halloween weekend 2009.

Auditions will be held June 28th, please contact us for location info.
1) Prepare a 3-5 minute performance piece appropriate to the show theme.
2) Come in appropriate costume attire. This does not have to be your final piece or costume. We want to know that you have access to the costuming quality we desire. Appropriate attire for this show draws influence from Steampunk ideals, Vaudeville and circus shows, and Balkan and neo-balkan attire.
3) A performance CV/resume is desirable, but not required.

Not a performer but want to be involved? We are looking for people who can dive in and help add to the overall atmosphere of our show. If you're at all curious or interested, please send us some information about yourself and what you do, and let us know how you'd like to be involved. There will also be vending opportunities, contact us for more details.
I've never ordered fabric before so I don't know much about the fabric types and stuff so I was wondering if someone could tell me what kind of fabric I need to use for tissu. I'm looking for a very stretchy fabric thats pretty thick. I've heard it's a polyester and lycra or something like that, and double stretch, with inter-something, I'm not quite sure. I'm not looking for tricot, I know I don't like tricot. I'm just not quite sure what the fabric i like is called and what fabric i should get from the Fabric Depot Company. If someone could help me out that would be great. Thanks so much!!!

Has anyone purchased fabric from either supplier and have a preference for one or the other? I've heard Saltex's quality varies a lot depending on their current inventory - I'm looking for their extra wide 120" tricot but would like to find out how it compares to Fabric Depot's 110" 40-denier tricot. Also, any comments on both stores' pricing and color selection? Thanks for your help!

Set-up May 15-17, The Burn May 21-25

WickerMan brings together Burn Culture, the Art of Giving and Ecological Responsibility in a festival that depends on the Radical Self-Expression of each individual. Based on the tenets of Burning Man of the Black Rock Desert, we actively incorporate their founding principles- Communal Participation, Decommodification, Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-Reliance. In essence, at WickerMan, Radical Self-Expression Meets Radical Earth Spirit.

We convene to celebrate what we as individuals offer to the community, through Art, Gifting and Self-Reliant Participation. Together we commune within the land to build and burn the biggest Man east of the Mississippi River. Individual participation is what makes this event happen, we depend on each other for content and execution. Every contribution, from Volunteering to Art Creation is essential to facilitate this WickerMan. What do you bring to the table?

Art, in its many mysterious ways, is at the core of this event. WickerMan offers over $6000 in Art Grants to fund a variety of initiatives, everything from Theme Camps, to beautiful Installations, Altars and Performance. Through Action and Creation we transcend the expected and stretch the paradigm of the possible.

WickerMan will again take place at Four Quarters of Artemas, PA, a beautifully ecologically diverse campground. Four Quarters has natural swimming holes in Sideling Creek, rolling meadows and pine forest. Four Quarters also has a great Ride-Share database to help you carpool to the event. Bring yourself and your inspiration to be a part of a community separate from the 'default world'. Check out www.wickermanburn.org for more information, Art Grants, voluteering and event registration.

Here ye here ye!

A Santa Cruz based children’s entertainment company, http://www.happilyeverlaughterparties.com is on the search for a few new performers! This is the perfect way to add some sparkle to your life (and extra cash) while only working 1-2 days per week! You can live anywhere in the Bay Area, as the position requires travel to several different cities. If you have an eye for costume and make-up design, and a knack for making children laugh, this may be your dream come true!

You may have heard of someone performing at birthday parties before...and let me take a moment to say Happily Ever Laughter is a bit different. Unlike most children’s entertainment providers, we do not use wigs or franchised characters (like Cinderella or Snow White). We like to remind children what can happen if you just let your imagination run wild, instead of just copying the television/movie characters. Each costume is hand-made by the head Faerie (Fae) and truly unique. We also focus ONLY on performing. We don't bring out jump houses and are not a 'one-stop-shop' party business. That means you are treated like a princess not only on the job, but behind the scenes as well.

Job Description;

Attend events around the Bay Area as a whimsical character (Mermaid, Faerie, Princess etc) and perform a magic show, twist colorful balloons, paint faces, make puppets come alive, and many other fun activities! Each performance is only an hour and a half and your compensation will be up to $90.00 (plus tips!)...and sometimes more (sometimes parties are longer in which case you are compensated $30 per extra 1/2 hr. Also, if you party is more than 1 hour from your home, you are compensated $30 per extra hour of driving, roundtrip). As you gain experience, you may have the option to attend 3-4 parties a weekend! If you look around at different companies that offer these services, you will find that Happily Ever Laughter pays the highest to our performers. Other companies range from $50-$75 per show and you need to provide all supplies, costumes, and travel costs. Our clients are also paying more for our quality of shows, and so you end up performing in more welcoming environments. That means being around better behaved children, happy grown-ups, and sometimes, bigger tips *smile*.

Full Faerie training will be provided to the right applicant. The training will consist of 3-4 sessions of 2-3 hours in Santa Cruz. Your compensation will begin after your initial training (these are skills you get to keep for a lifetime) with your first tag-a-long (where you get to see a real live Faerie perform!). Compensation will begin at $75 and increase as you receive good reviews from parents. If your preview goes super well, faeries have been known to start at $90 (or even higher!) right off the bat! With proper practice, you could begin performing by the end of February! Again, the training will take place at the Tree House headquarters in Santa Cruz, CA...the schedule is quite flexible. After each training session, you will be required to rehearse on your own time to prepare for a final performance for me (the head Faerie). If you have too much on your plate (full time student+extra job+slaying dragons in the evenings), you should not apply for this job. It takes a lot of time to become a true Faerie, but the reward is immense. Once trained, the job doesn't take much time at all. Just 1.5 hours per party!

You must have your own, reliable vehicle, as you may have to travel up to 1 hour away (depending on where you live) for the event. Most shows are in San Jose or San Francisco. You also MUST MUST MUST be punctual. Being on time (and even early) is more important than anything else. If this is a problem for you, do not apply. I ask that you are available 3 weekends a month, with one weekend off (if you want, you can work 4 weekends). Anytime off must be requested at least one month in advance.

Applicants are strongly recommended to have experience with theater, young children, music, glitter, and working independently.

Email your resume to (please, NO phone calls)
happilyeverlaughter@gmail.com
and include a current photo of yourself, any special talents, and at least 3 references (not family). These positions usually yield a lot of applicants, so I encourage you to make your resume STAND OUT! This is one job where creativity comes first, so let it shine! Good luck!

Respectfully,
Fae Diddle Diddle

There is Circus and Cirkus
There is American Circus and European Circus
There is Classic American Circus and Traditional American Circus
Anyone in San Francisco interested in making it a group outing? Would be cool to meet some of you I haven't met yet. It's at the Embarcadero Center Cinema. I talked to the theater manager and he can only guarantee it will be playing through Thurs the 14th (depends on how successful it is). I'm thinking of going Sunday evening (showtimes will be announced tomorrow). Anyone interested?

In addition I am reeeaallly hoping to improve, which for me requires building a lot of strength because I am wee and noodley-armed.

So does anyone have any suggestions for either/both alleviating muscle aches (the ordinary, after-workout kind; I haven't injured myself) and building upper-body strength for trapeze/corde lisse work?

I am having auditions for my new movie "Aberrant Behavior" Saturday June Seventh at Mamma Buzz Cafe in downtown Oaklands Art District 2318 Telegraph Ave from 4-6PM. If your interested in the movie you can e-mail me at: aberrantbehaviormovie@gmail.com. I have already casted some of the roles and have people working on it, I just have not cast all of them yet and of course the female lead.

There will be some paid roles (of course the leads) but this is a low budget (around 25-35,000 or so) affair so it won't be a whole lot. Just to warn you.

Aberrant Behavior, is basically a love story about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. They have a very co-dependent relationship and with there disorders too , they literally destroy each other.

There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

THERE WILL BE SOME SEXUALITY AND NUDITY FOR THE TWO LEADS, AS WELL AS MISTY AND FOGGY TO A LESSER DEGREE. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME FOR THOSE ROLES, IF YOUR NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT. THANK YOU.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

LEADS:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin. Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice. He falls in love with Aiko. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUALS SITUATIONS REQUIRED-CAST

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered. She falls in love with Victor. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUAL SITUATIONS REQUIRED.

SUPPORTING LEADS:
Pedida Muertos- (20's -40's)-Mexican- Victor's nearly catatonic - mute drug addict mother, who is usually messing around with strange men, and drugged up. Mostly abuses Victor through neglect. Mostly shown in flashbacks, but one scene in present as well. Young actress aged to look older in present, or vice versa.

Misty & Foggy (20's) two girls that Victor and Chad meet at the bar, who are wasted, and act and look like twins. Very ditzy, drunk, corporate, normal. They take Victor and Chad back to there place. Drunken debauchery ensues.

Spic 'N' Span (20's -40's)- One of the horrible mascots for the advertising firm Victor works for, "Spic n Span's Whiten it up" Cleaning product. They play racist cliched versions of mexican house workers. Think Samo. It's meant to be horrible, and it of course offends Victor.

Aiko's Father-
A militant cold hearted man who sexually abuses aiko. Must be bilingual Japanese & English

Aiko's Mother-
Always screaming at Aikos father. Bi-lingual fluent in German & English

VARIOUS:
Hipster's (18-30) Some with speaking roles. A house party Victor crashes.

Office workers (20's -on) Some with speaking roles.

Various small roles for the horrible commercials and promo's from the firm Victor briefly works for

Other roles as well-Not listed

First of May, All Clowns Birthday

Did you know that All Clowns are born on May first?

It's true! According to tradition, all clowns are born on May first, which is the reason why a rookie, or beginner clown is known as a "First of May."

Some believe that the tradition of "First of May" may have begun with Joseph "Joey" Grimaldi. Others believe that it begun with the American circus. Which ever is the truth, it is an important holiday for clowns.

Here's a bit of background on First of May.

First, here's Joseph Grimaldi.

Joseph Grimaldi was an innovator, his performance as Joey introduced the modern clown to the world. Today he is known as the father of modern clowning.

Joseph Grimaldi was the original 'Clown Joey', the term 'Joey' being used to describe clowns since his day. Of his own name he punned 'I am grim all day - but I make you laugh at night!' Grimaldi became the most popular clown in pantomime, and was responsible for establishing the clown as the main character in the Harlequinade, in place of Harlequin.

His style of clowning had its origins in the Italian commedia dell'arte of the sixteenth century, but in the popular Harlequinades of the early nineteenth century he emerged as the founding father of modern day clowns. He died in May 1837.

Second, here's the second theory. The month of May was traditionally the time when circuses made their season run, thus rookie clowns are known as "First of Mays." May being the beginning of the warm months was an ideal time of the year to launch the circus season, which ran through the summer months.

Today, circuses may begin their run as early as January, and end in December, but one thing is constant, clowns continue to be born on May first.

Please join me in wishing all clowns a "Happy First Of May."

If you are a clown, remember to celebrate your special day.

We, clowns, deserve, need, and earned this special day.

I invite you to revive this tradition by celebrating May first as "All Clowns Birthday." It maybe us who will be remembered as the one who made it possible for “First of May” to become a National holiday, even an international celebration.

We can do it.

Call to Artists

An all day performance event is being planned for May 31st in Santa Cruz starting early noon and continuing until sun down. This event will happen at San Lorenzo Park, an outside public space adjacent to downtown Santa Cruz and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The intention of this event is to explore interventionist performance art and create space for collaboration and improvisation. By interventionism we bring performances outside the theatre space and place them in a public setting for the creation of community. Collaboration and improvisation will support the role of the performer, dropping the role of audience member.
The blueprint of the event encourages spontaneous performance areas and will include:
•	An open forum for artists whose performances call for a more spontaneous, site specific environment
•	A main stage
•	Band creation area – with musical instruments and encouraged experimental band performances
•	Workshop area
•	Task oriented improvisational scores to participate in and perform for one another
•	Trade area for artisans (non-monetary)
•	Artists who have still-art are welcomed to install their work within the space
Those who contact ahead of time will have the choice to be scheduled into the main stage area and are also encouraged to take their performances outside the main stage for a shift of interaction. Even though this opportunity is offered, our hope is that it will not subtract from the spontaneity of the event or create separation between audience and performer.
We encourage those who perform to teach a workshop during the day to share ideas and art disciplines. The content of the workshop can be connected to your specific performance but is not required to be. There will be a workshop board to write down the time and content of the workshop. Do not be discouraged to perform if you would prefer not to teach a workshop, the workshop is not required but appreciated.
This event is free. Please do not expect to pay for performances, workshops, and entry; or to be paid. This space is for all to share performance and empower one another through teaching and critiquing.
Due to the size of the space and structure of the event we are asking for there to be no amplified music. Sorry if this comes as an inconvenience for some.
If your performance contains fire or open flame please contact us for further notice.

This is a collaborative effort and we want to hear your ideas as well. As much as this email might make the organization sound centralized this is a non-centralized event and we invite all too participate in the functions of making this situation manifest. This event is for all of us and more, so please send your questions, comments, ideas, critiques, and concerns to spacieface@gmail.com. Let’s get ideas spiraling.

Here's the original message:

Hey everyone,

I am part of a 10 person circus/music performance group called Criss Cross
Circus. We are based out of Hampshire College in western Massachusetts and this
summer we are planning a 4 week May-June tour from the east coast out to
Seattle in our veggie bus. One of our stops is San Francisco.

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding venues that would be interested in booking a small circus show, or bands that would be interested in sharing a show (we do a lot of work with bands in western Mass, so we have a lot of experience with being general crowd winder-uppers and visual entertainment). We would be pretty adaptable but the place would need a semi-legit stage (not just a foot and a half thing in the corner of a bar).

Our website is: circusfolkunite.googlepages.com/cr...cus

please contact me at jnf04@hampshire.edu if you have any information that would be at all useful.

thanks! --Juliana
